dirty politics

I have really made a concerted effort to lay off the political blogging here lately, but I just have to speak up on this one. When I went to Kerry-04.org I was struck by the picture of Kim Jong-il, Osama, and Sadam with the question asked "This November who would they vote for". Without a doubt they would vote for Kerry. Am I wrong about that? People might call Bush a hot head, war-hawk or something else, but at this point in our nations history I feel much safer having Bush in the WH.

On the other hand I don?t think this site helps convince non-bushies to vote for him. If you are going to present truths about Kerry's short comings to try and convince people who they should vote for, then I don?t think mocking Kerry while doing it is helpful in your cause. Though, political cartoons have been a part of our nation?s history going back to the colonist, so maybe I?m wrong.

One last thing: I just love the political process in this country. Every 4 years I look forward to the conventions and hearing what everyone has to say. The Democratic convention has been quite interesting. There have been several really good speeches and other that should have been left out. I think they should have dropped Gore from the speech line up. I think the Dems already have their base fired up and if anything they turned off some potential voters with his speech. I really wanted to catch Clinton the first night, but it came on way too late and I missed it. I am not sure why they had him come on so late, but I guess there was some reason. I might have to find his speech on-line somewhere. I love watching his speeches because I could always count on him to get my ire up. Well, that?s not the only reason. There is something about the man I find extremely fascinating.

Carters? speech was the best I have seen so far. After Carters speech I would have gotten up to go early vote if I were one of those people that needed all of their ?opinions? feed to them?.Heinz-Kerry?s speech was probably the worst.

tar baby

My boss?s boss was talking to me a few weeks back and referred to the project I was working on as a tar baby. I think that description is probably the best description I have heard in a long time. I don?t know if it is because of where I work or if it is just apropos to programming in general, but it is just a perfect description for those projects that get dropped in your lap, and for whatever reason you just can?t liberate yourself from.
It?s funny because now at work everyone is using the tar baby phrase to describe that project that they hate but just can?t get rid of it.

the cleaning lady

I have an issue with the cleaning lady here at work, but I just can't bring myself to talk to her about it. I normally don?t have too much of an issue speaking my mind, but for some reason I am at a stalemate with myself over the issue. You see, the lady that empties my trash also goes beyond that. From time to time she throws cups on my desk away and it is driving me nuts. I understand that the cleaning people are suppose to throw some stuff away so that ants and the like aren't attracted to the place, but tossing out the water bottles and cups that I use everyday is over the line.

I think she thinks she is doing a nice thing by cleaning up my cube, but how does she know that what she is cleaning up is trash? All that said, yesterday I walked into my cube and 2 Styrofoam cups of mine were no longer there. So I told myself that at the end of the day I was going to talk to her when she came to clean up. At 5:30 when I was on my way out of the building she was standing right by the exit door I use. Everything was just perfect for me to politely ask her to stop throwing stuff on my desk away, but I just could not make myself stop and talk to her.

I think my issue is that I don?t know how to politely ask someone to stop throwing my personal property away. It just seems so strange. If anybody knows how I should phrase it then please share.

he might have invented it

Since I did mention that Ben though he might have invented a new word, I think I should also mention that Jason might have invented a new word during a conversation we had about a year ago. The word was suspishy, which is a mix between suspicious and fishy. I am not sure about the spelling, but this is probably pretty close.

http headers

I am working on a php script to pull my blog roll from a database. My goal is to have my blog roll ordered on the page by last update date. So the last blog to post will be at the top. Also, if someone has not posted they will be dropped off the list after 3 months or so. Once they post again they will be added back to the list automagicly(ben thinks he might have invented this word but he is not sure).

I have about 90% of the script written. I seem to have made a assuption that was completly wrong. My understanding was that http headers were included with every page, but when I run this code it does not look that way.

Why is that?

missing voters

I really think this blog entry is worth reading. Make sure you read the Wall Street Journal editorial by BY LARRY L. EASTLAND call The Empty Cradle Will Rock.
In the actual popular vote for president in the 2000 general election in Florida, George W. Bush was declared the winner by 537 votes. But if the 260,962 Missing Voters of Florida had been present to vote, Al Gore would have won by 45,366 votes. Missing Voters--through decisions made in the 1970s and early 1980s, encouraged and emboldened by the feminist movement at the height of its power--altered the outcome of the U.S. presidency a generation later, in a way proponents of legal abortion could not have imagined.

I have to say it is distressing that the political makeup of this country is changing due to the loss of 40 million lives. It just makes me sick!

When I read this story I started feeling a little nauseous. I decided to track down a picture of the guy, thinking that he would look like a dead man walking. Surprisingly he looks healthy. I stole the image from this site.

fits in my pocket

I forgot to mention that I went to the CHADNUG on Tuesday night. I guess there were between 40 and 60 people there. The topic of conversation was Longhorn and Eric did the speaking this time. The most interesting part of the talk was on XAML. I don?t feel like blogging about XAML but I will say it does seem interesting and way too proprietary.

The highlight of the evening was the swag. I ended up landing the View Sonic Pocket PC (V37). very nice?. The problem is I don?t know what to do with it. I really want to get a digital camera but at the same time I would like to keep the Pocket PC.

Because I have a MSDN Universal subscription I was previously given a View Sonic Pocket PC (V37)., but I sold it on eBay. From time to time I have regretted selling the thing, but I really have no use for it. Now that I have one again I am stuck in a quandary. Sell or not to sell. I think I am going to sell it because I already have the info set up on eBay, so selling it will be very easy. I guess I need to figure out which camera to get. I want something that fits in my pocket and takes great pictures.

Any ideas?

Take the Quiz
I have taken this quiz a few times over the last few years, and I keep moving up vertically every time I take it. I think the last time I took the quiz there were a lot more question, which might account for some of the change. I might agree with the libertarians on a lot of issues, but I believe my vote is too important to throw away. Especially this year.
There are two issues that make me vote the way I do. They are the sanctity of life and the sanctity of marriage. It is funny that the way I vote boils down to the 2nd chapter of Genesis. In that chapter God does two things. He breaths his breath of life into man and creates the institution of marriage. For me the most important thing I can do is to work to protect those two base institutions.
If my vote did not count as much as it could this election, I would really consider throwing my vote to a Libertarian.

Thank you to Mayor Ramsey and the 4 commissioners who voted against this budget. By voting for this budget and against the proposed tax increase, Chairman Adams and his 4 sidekicks have effectively shafted both our children and the County's employees. I'm a single mother and while a tax increase would have meant adjusting my budget, I am all for doing it to give my sons the best education possible. Now not only will I have to worry about whether they'll get a good education, but also whether they will be safe while they are at school with the SROs gone. I for one will certainly be looking forward to the next elections for the Commission. It's time to get rid of the 5 who have set education in Hamilton County back so many years. They certainly don't care about our children or their employees!

I don't think I have ever seen a situation in which throwing money at a problem would fix it, and I am glad we have 5 commissioners who understand that throwing other peoples money (i.e. their constituents) at the problem won't fix it either.

I really don't mean this in a harsh or belittling way but: At what point in your life did you start feeling entitled to other people's money? I mean really. Please stop for a moment and think about it. There is something inside of you that makes you feel entitled to money that I earn. I view you quite differently then you view me. I see you as someone who earns their own money, all of which I am not entitled. I see you as over taxed and weighed down with a financial burden that the government has laid on you. On top of that, you are someone that is getting very little return on your money. I do understand that you feel strongly about your children's education, and that is good. Why do you think that the best way to raise money to support your children's education is through increasing my tax rate! Why not get together with all those who want their taxes increased and send the Hamilton county school board a monthly check equal to the amount that you want your taxes increased? Or better yet, why not get together with parents from your child's school and take a collection to hire a SRO?

I wish I had a digital camera!

One nice thing about working across from the courthouse is that several times during the year there are protest, picketer, people gathering for prayer, or other things that I find interesting. Today as I was getting to work there was a large (200 people or so) crowd protesting outside of the east entrance to the courthouse. When I saw the crowd I told myself, "David don?t go over there", but ultimately my curious side had me walking the extra block or so to get a better look.

The protesters were protesting the budget cuts that the county commission were making. I guess the majority of the protesters were under the age of 18, and they were holding up signs like "SOS save our schools", "Don't mess with my education" and the like. I did notice three people standing on the northeast corner protesting the protesters, and Dr. Dumas was one of them. I would have loved to be able to post a picture. He was holding up a sign that said something like: "Do you like higher taxes". One of the guys he was standing with had a sign that said "Honk if you don't want a tax increase". Any way, it was great to see Dr. Doom and his signage. If I can track down a picture or if someone else can then I will post it.

Religion or Politics

Thinking about Independence day In one of my other posts I uploaded a letter that I sent to Senator Alexander. I was not sure which category to place it under: religion or politics. I decided to post it using multiple categories, which got me thinking that posting the letter under both categories lacked a certain amount of political correctness. After thinking about it a bit my conclusion was that if the founding fathers could not differentiate their Religion from Politics, then why should I?

Take a look at what the founders said in the Declaration of Independence. They understood that rights did not originate from laws or government, but rights ultimately came from God. In the Declaration of Independence it states: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. The founders understood something that most of us don't. They understood that if the ultimate statement of rights came from the government then they would have had absolutely no right to oppose the rule of the king. Instead they clearly understood that rights originated from God and were endowed upon them by Him. They had no problem standing up to the king and claiming what they had already given.
All that said today I am going to post this under the religion and politics categories, and then thank God for them both.

why am i still using MT? because I finally got it set up the way I wanted it.

It has been a while since I made a blog entry. I was using Premium-Host.com as my host and they changed servers on me, which made MT choke. Every time I would add an entry or someone would leave a comment the security on the file would change and the file could not be viewed. I would have to go in and change the security to get it to work again. I did find the answer to my problem:

My PHP output files need to be executable

If you are generating PHP files through Movable Type, some webservers will require that the generated files have the execute bit set (in other words, that the permissions are at least 755). By default all files created by the system will have their permissions set to 666, and you will receive errors about your files not being executable.

To fix this, add this line to your mt.cfg file:

HTMLPerms 0777

This will set the default permissions for all files created by the system to 777; note that if you are using the HTMLUmask setting in mt.cfg, the setting for HTMLPerms will be adjusted by the umask setting. For example, if you have set HTMLPerms to 0777, and you set HTMLUmask to 0022, all files created by the system will have permissions of 0755.

It was the last straw with premium-host, so I jumped to lakesite.net. I am glad that I did. Andy is developer friendly and that is nice to have in your web-host.
Once I did change to lakesite.net I did have one other issue with MT. That I never could resolve. I thought it was this was the answer:

I changed hosts, and now I can't log in to Movable Type.

When you change hosting providers (or just move to a different server at the same provider), it is possible that the two servers have different versions of the Berkeley DB library; this is the library that Movable Type uses to store your data. When you copy the DB files from one host to another, if the two hosts have different versions of Berkeley DB, the new host will not be able to read the files from the old host.

This can be fixed by converting the DB files over to the format used by the new library version; this is accomplished in several different ways, depending on the Berkeley DB versions involved. The files that need to be converted are all of the files in your db directory whose filenames end in either .db or .idx (the .lock files do not need to be converted).

The following steps require that you have shell access to your server, and imply that you are somewhat familiar with running Unix commands; if this is not the case, you should ask your hosting provider to help you.

  1. First, and most important, back up your DB files; you need to create backup copies of all of the files in your db directory. (If you do this by downloading the directory, make sure to transfer it in binary mode.)

  2. The easiest way to convert the DB files is to use the db_upgrade program; unfortunately this is not available on every server, but it may be available on yours. To find out, log into your shell account, and type the following at your shell prompt (<db_dir> is the path to your db directory):
    $ cd <db_dir>
    $ db_upgrade *.db *.idx
    

    If your server has db_upgrade, this will convert all of your DB files over to the new format. If this works, you're done, and you can skip the following steps; Movable Type should now work.

  3. If the above db_upgrade command does not work--for example, if you get an error saying that command not found--then you will need to use the following method to convert your data. This method dumps out all of the data from your DB files, then loads it into new versions of those DB files.

    The program used to dump the contents of your DB files is called either one of two things: db_dump, or db_dump185. To determine which program you need to use, first try running the following command in your shell account:

    $ cd <db_dir>
    $ db_dump author.db
    

    If this command is successful, you will see a screenful of data dumped out. If it is unsuccessful, you will get an error message; in this case, try using the following command:

    $ db_dump185 author.db
    

    Again, if the command is successful, you will see a screenful of data. If this also fails, then you will need to contact your hosting provider.

  4. Now that you have determined which db_dump program to use (either db_dump or db_dump185), you can dump all of the data from your old DBM files and load it into new versions of those files. To do that, try the following (substitute db_dump185 instead of db_dump, if necessary):
    $ db_dump -f author.db.data author.db
    $ mv author.db author.db.old
    $ db_load -f author.db.data author.db
    $ chmod 666 author.db
    

    You will need to run these four commands for each file in your db directory whose name ends in .db or .idx. After you have done so, you're done, and Movable Type should now work.


But it wasn't. Andy and I did everything we could to save the old entries (and I really thank him for all the hard work) but in the end I just had to start fresh and manually reenter the old post. One good thing is that I am now using MySQL vs. Berkley, which I like. Oh yea all the comments that were added previously were lost. Well?I actually have them in the Berkeley format. I might eventually go and dig all the text out and post them back? I doubt it though.
