Robertson vs. Chaves

Pat_Roberson_88_For_President.jpg

On the 700 club on Monday (08/22/05) Ole Pat Robertson said we should assassinate Hugo Chaves.

“We don't need another 200 billon dollar war to get rid of one strong arm Dictator. It is a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and get it over with.”

I just don't know what to think of ole Pat these days. I have not watched his show in a couple of years but the last time I watched it I remember being uncomfortable with it. Somewhere between the nepotism and his political rants that take place right before they pray leave me feeling a bit uncomfortable.

Don't get me wrong I do believe my relationship with Christ should affect my politics. But, there is something about Pat's version of the mix that I just don't have a reference point for.

I don't know.....

On that note: I remember my Dad sporting a Pat Robertson for President bumper sticker back in 88.

Robertson is a nut. Calling for the assasination of Democratically elected rulers is way over the line. The US may not like the guy, but he was elected by the people, and I believe the UN certified the election as being fair.

Also, if the FCC found that he was using public airwaves to encourage murder, he could go to jail for a long time. I doubt it will happen, but interesting still.

Not to mention the whole praying for supreme court justices to die so we can pack the courts with conservatives is a little freaky too.

I had not heard that. Do you have a link for that?
I have to admit that I have hoped that bush would get to nominate a bunch of justices this time around, but it never crossed my mind to pray that they would die. That’s funny. In some way that reminds me of the Dawn Treader’s post from yesterday on praying through the Psalms.

I’m curious as to how ole Pat’s prayer went :-)

It sounds like you are describing what I refer to as a "URGL" or Ultra Religious God Lover. Really the emphasis is all on the R. There are UGHs (Ultra God Haters), GSs (God Seekers), GLs, UGLs, and finally URGLs. I don't do well with the URGLs. They make my skin crawl and my head spin around. Sorry, I'm having way to much fun with this train of thought.

What I am really trying to say here, is that I appreciate your post.

Hey how did you get the security code thing? I want one.

agirloutther,
here is a link to the security code thing. here it is the one brian is using. I am using a different one but can't find a link to the code anywhere. The problem is that you have a blogspot account, and i don't believe they allow you to install anything on their servers. I am not sure what blogspot will allow you to do to fight spam.

Wish I could be more help......

Thanks for trying. It didn't work. Hope you have a great day!

I agree with the first post questioning how we can want the assasination on democratically elected leaders just because some do not agree with them. How would some feel if Bush was assasinated? This also makes a mockery of scripture that says to pray for the leaders and pray for those who persecute you. I don't remember the prayer for them to be taken out! Only God makes those calls and I don't think He needs our help.

I agree for the most part. The story of David and Saul comes to mind. I remember that David would never lay a hand on Saul even when he had a great opportunity to take him out. I guess my question is when does assassination become right or does it? I know we (US & GB) tried to take out Hitler many times, which in retrospect seems to have been right and just. I’m curious; when does assassination become right?

Don't forget, the Iraq war started with an attempt to make a "surgical strike" to take out Saddam Hussein and his sons. The difference is, we were at war with Iraq and Nazi Germany. We aren't at war with Venezuela, nor do we have just cause to start a war with them.

Don't forget about the tent maker's wife. She invited the fleeing refuge leader into the tent, made him food, let him sleep there, and then took a tent spike and drove it through his head!!! Ouch!

I agree it's God's call, but it seems that He does make the call sometimes.
