the hunt
blog huntI have found myself on a hunt the last several days, and am surprised to find that I have only bagged two blogs. I am hunting down fellow torchbearers. I am looking to start a new blog roll of torchbearers. I really don?t care which school you went to. I went to Ravencrest Chalet back in 94, 95 and a very small part of 96. So far I have found one that attended Ravencrest Chalet and one from Capernwray Hall. Part of my hope with this post is to get enough words and links to the torchbearer schools so that google will help people find me. The fact is that there might not be a whole lot of torchbearers that blog out there, but I hope I am wrong about that.
So if you attended one of the schools below and have a blog then give a comment and a link. Or if you have anything you would like to say one way or the other, then leave a comment.
Below is a list of all the torchbearer schools that I know of:Albania: Udh?kryq
Australia: Wongabri
Austria: Schloss Klaus & Tauernhof
Canada: Capernwray Harbour Bible Centre & Porteurs du Flambeau
Costa Rica: Portantorchas
England: Capernwray Hall
France: Champfleuri
Germany: Bodenseehof & Klostermuehle
Greece: Kingfisher Project
India: Himalayan Torchbearers
Indonesia: Pondok Kepenrey
Japan: Yamanakako Cove
New Zealand: Monavale
Romania: Purtatorii de Faclie
Spain: Rio Vida
Sweden: Holsby Brunn

Posted by: lisa at January 16, 2005 11:04 PMI went to His Hill for 00-02. I was there for a year and a half. My website is www.vinthomas.com and my blog is www.vinthomas.blogspot.com
Peace,

Posted by: Vin Thomas at January 17, 2005 01:54 AMI have to admit that I am totally stoked about the new blog roll. I have added it to the left. I was not sure I would find any other blogging Torchbearers out there. I look forward to getting to know y?all better through reading your blogs.
Posted by: gid at January 17, 2005 10:41 AMYo, what up Ravencrest! I went '02-'03 when that freakin' huge snowstorm hit at spring break. I'm better known as one of the Cottage Boys . . . nathanjdavenport.blogspot.com
Posted by: Nathan J. Davenport at January 18, 2005 01:47 AMNice. I have added you to my blog roll.
Posted by: gid at January 18, 2005 08:57 AMI went to Capernwray Hall in 2002-03 and I blog! Kriskey.blogspot.com Great idea!

Thanks. I hope all the torchbearing bloggers will start a torchbearing blog roll at one point or another. It will give our blogs a higher page rank on search engines which will help old classmates find our pages. The Torchbearer site is not very good for finding fellow classmates. I wish I had the time because I would love to fix the alumni page. It is just very clunky and the data is either hard to find or out of date. Of the ten or so bloggers I have found you are the only one that I found on that page. Just about all the rest have been found by searching resumes on google.
Also, I think it is a good way to pull encouragement from each others day to day lives. Plus there is just a camaraderie that exists from having experience something that only a small percent of people on this planet were able to experience.
About a year ago I decided to take a German class for the fun of it. One of the guys in the class of 12 or so people had attended Bodenseehof. It was great to be able to share our experiences.
Side Note on a future blog post:
I was able to get the alumni page to pullback everyone?s info into one browser window. After massaging that data a bit I was able to get a list of all the alumni web pages. I think there were about 150. It was very interesting to see what ministries and jobs the Lord had placed some of us in. Here are just a few links:

Well, got to go. I will add you to my blog roll
Hey - who ever you are. (I couldn't find a name on the main blog page). I was at ravencrest the same time you were, though not as a student, but instead as one of those staff kids running all over the place.
For the records I did go to Capernwrey Hall in 97-98 and Tauernhof for spring school.
I don't have my own blogging site but would love to get an e-mail.
Later - Dan
Posted by: Dan Thomas at April 5, 2005 12:01 PMHey Dan,
I?m sure the memories of all those students you have met throughout the years just run together. I do remember you. I think we all ended up snowboarding a few times together at Hidden Valley in the park.
While at Ravencrest one of the girls started calling me JD and it just stuck. So you would have known me as either JD or David back then. I never liked JD too much but everyone else did so it stuck for the almost two years I was up there.
Here is a picture of me; I?m the one taking the picture. It might help you put a face to the name. I just realized how very few pictures I have of myself on my blog. I?m not even sure if you would recognize me in this picture. I use to have long hair. Here is a link: click
Currently I am not sending out e-mails when my blog is updated, but I do hope you end up back here from time to time. I hope your parents are doing well. By the way if you know of any of other torchbearers blogs I would love to add them to my blog role.
What are you doing now? I see your email address is a @gbcommuntychurch.com address. Are you still in Estes Park?
Hey David (or JD), I checked out the picture but I couldn't quite connect the face maybe the long hair would do it. The name JD sounds really familiar - did you stay for leadership?
Did you wear tie-dye shirts? (just a memory that I think was connected to a JD with long hair) Funny what you remember!
You asked if I was still in Estes, Oh but I wish! I would love to be hiking the slopes of Hidden valley or Bear Lake right now, but I am in an office in Green Bay Wisconsin. Actually it is a great situation. My wife, daughter, and I moved up here last year to run the young adults program at a church. It has been awesome, though the terrain is rather flat. We are expecting another little squirt in June and I'm sure that should pull my parents in, who are traveling like crazy as usual.
I'll check out the site every once in a while and if I hear of other bloggers, I'll give them the details.
Talk to you later,
Dan
Yes I stayed for leadership and I was the one with the tie-dyed shirts. I?m glad to hear you are married and have some little ones. I am in the same boat.
May God bless you indeed!
Posted by: gid at April 6, 2005 03:19 PMHej Hej!
I went to Holsby brunn 2000-01! It was one of the best years of my life! Any other Holsbyites out there?
i have a blog...but i havent updated it in awhile. :-(

Peace out!
Posted by: Dawn at April 24, 2005 03:39 PMHey Dawn,
Thanks for leaving a comment. I will add you to my blog roll for sure. Though, you need to update your blog :)
I have talked to a lot of Torchbearers out there but I think you are the first that I have run into that attended Holsby Brunn. I checked out your blog and the snow out of that window looks great! I wish we got that kind of snow here in Chattanooga.
Capernwray Hall 97-98 and then worked at Ravencrest sometime after that. Tripped in here via google looking for Dan Thomas. Regards.
Posted by: si at July 20, 2005 10:00 AMsi,
Glad you left a comment. I have added you to my blog roll. Can't wait to check out your blog. I guess you found Dan's email address?
Hi! I am a mom of a future (hopefully) Capenwray Harbour in Canada. We are having a terrible time finding a loan so that she can go to school. It seems because the school(s)are not accredited no one will do a loan. Anybody else have the same issues? Any suggestions or ideas? Help! THANKS....please email me if you have ideas. Felicia
Posted by: Felicia at July 28, 2005 06:37 PMHey torchbearer bloggers - I did many stints Ravencrest 79, England 80, Taught in Sweden 84 New Zealand 85 and Thetis a few times. A high light in life and now as a teaching pastor in Winnipeg
I encourage folks to go and grow at Capernwray. Blessings - Seek Him. Dan
I went to the Chalet in '97-98 but i actually ended up leaving in '97 cause my brother died from a heart and lung disease. But i just thought i'd find some other who went as well...you can go to either site and leave a comment if you want...
Posted by: mark wojciechowski at August 31, 2005 10:06 PMHey, my name is Brianna, and I'm thinking about going to Ravencrest next year. I don't have a blog or anything, but if I have time at school, maybe I'll start one ;0)
Posted by: Brianna at September 20, 2005 09:09 AMSo i'm pretty sure no one who went that year remembers me! And i'm pretty sure the last time i left a message here i didn't get my url up for some reason...so here's my myspace site info...

Posted by: dave and susan Naus at November 25, 2005 12:29 PMGood idea to start a site for fellow torchbearers. I went to fall/winter school in Holsbybrunn, Sweden and Spring school at Capernwray, England 2002-2003. Greatest 9 months of my life! I'd go back anytime if God directed me there. I don't have a blog site yet, but have been thinking about it. Holsby has a pretty good alumni page and good newsletter updates out of all the centers. Hi Katherine Riskey!--Don't know if you remember me from Capernwray spring school I used to be one of the students that did the morning run around the campus with the group of students with Dave and Stuart leading us.
Posted by: Mandy Young at November 28, 2005 11:26 PMAll right Gidcomb...
I stumbled across this site and there are a few of us from Ravencrest '95 down here in Texas with one burning question....What ever happened to Tom Goble? Glad you're above ground and hope you're doing well.
Chris Rutland
Posted by: Chris Rutland at December 1, 2005 10:31 PMHey Rutland what?s up! I?m glad you left a comment. I have thought about you from time to time, and was curious as to how everything had turned out. You are the first from my stint at Ravencrest Chalet to comment. I should give you a prize.
I got married after my year at leadership, and moved to Chattanooga. Tom Goble was one of the groomsmen in my wedding. Since then we have pretty much lost touch. It has been two years since I have spoken with him. I think I might have a cell phone number if you are interested.
You said in your comment that there were a FEW of y?all down in Texas. Who are the few? It is funny because I have met (in person and on-line) torchbearers from all over the world since I left Ravencrest Chalet but I think you are the first one I met from our class.
What are you up to now?
David -
Since I showed up mid year, in January '95, I had the opportunity to spend time with two different classes. From the first year (and the way I eventually got to Tx from Va) is Brad Cox. He's doing well - a firefighter, married w/ a daughter. Things are busy, but we still try to get together every couple of weeks. From the second year (and this happened by a number of great "coincidences" well after Ravencrest)is Jill Patton, who is now Jill Rutland. We've been married four years, live in Austin, Tx and are expecting our first in Febuary - a son. Ravencrest has been on my mind for a few weeks now, ever since we got the notice about the dining hall expansion and the prayers and finances that are needed. I'll catch up with you in a few, but for now take care and shoot me Goble's # when you get a chance.
Posted by: Chris Rutland at December 3, 2005 09:14 AMYou and Jill, who would of thought! Well in retrospect y'all make a great couple. I would love to see a picture of the two of you and to hear more about the coincidences that brought you and Jill together. Congratulations on the son. We had our first on groundhog?s day 02/02/03. He will be three this year. Our second was born on 12/18/2004, so we are getting ready to celebrate him turning one here shortly.
I will shoot you Mr. T's #. Don?t be a stranger.
Dave and Chris, two of the most genuine of blokes I've ever known. You guys rock. I MISS RAVENCREST! I never felt more at home anywhere. Does Ravencrest ever have class reunions. We should so plan one some day.
I am producing a show on Fox TV called fast hungry animals slow people.
I'm living in what is now new New Orleans. Some still call it Mandeville. A geographical oddity. Big city traffic, small town amenities.
I've been working in a pharmacy as a pharm tech while studying pre-pharmacy. I just recently decided to go for an MBA instead. It pays more to wear a suit. Money doesn't make the world go round, but it helps me to go round the world.
I may be moving to the Woodlands in the next year or two. It's located a little north of Houston.
You both must write me and give me the unabridged version of whats sup. Email t_m_goble@yahoo.com
I've got 2 cumulative finals to take on Wed. Dec. 14. One of them is for stinking calculus. I will email both of you in great detail after this academic bludgeoning is through.
Be prepared for I have more questions for each of you than were proffered by the warren commision.
I wish that we could all be hanging out 2gether right now. That would rock like being on a boat in the Caribbean at sunset with a kickin band on deck and boat drinks in hand.
May the good LORD smile down upon you always.
P.S. Can I mention drinks on this site. Of course I meant in moderation. In the nearly immortal words of Rick James, "It's a celebration bitches."
Good luck on the finals. Making it through cal and cal 2 was quite a struggle for me. Talking about drinks is Okay, but please no more Rick James quotes. How long do you have left on your undergrad? What is in Woodlands, Texas?
Posted by: gid at December 13, 2005 12:37 PMI've got about 2 1/2 yrs. till I finish undergrad, then I will get my masters. My ultimate intention is to own my own businesses. 74% of the wealthiest people in the U.S. are entreprenuers. It's going to take alot of money to afford the Jimmy Buffet like lifestyle that I've been dreamin of.
My sister's family is in Woodlands, TX. I visited there for Thanksgiving. What a holliday, we celebrate the sacrifices of others by eating till were sick. Anyhow, Woodlands is perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing locale I have been to in the U.S. with the exception of Estes Park, of course. My mother plans on moving there, and my father has already bought a home about 20 miles from there and will be relocating permanently in a couple of months.
How is the work life? Do you find it to be pleasingly challenging? Do you enjoy what you do?
Have an excellent Christmas my friend.
My daughter is at Capernwray. She is discouraged by the lack of good teaching there. She says it's more like pastors sharing talks than the kind of "Bible School" rigor she expected. She is thinking of skipping spring school at Holsby Brunn and volunteering for a mission agency instead. Do you torchbearer folks have a perspective to share on this? It is tough to advise her without being there to experience it ourselves. We'd love to hear from some alums about your experience. Thanks! Linda
Posted by: Linda Rudat at February 11, 2006 02:36 PMI have to say it is hard to believe that a torchbearer school would be slacking on the teaching. Of course, I can not speak for Capernwray Hall because I went to Ravencrest, but my thoughts are this: It is no accident she is at Capernwray. Not just everyone gets in, and from what I have heard there are people that are turned away from torchbearer schools every year. If God did not want her there she would not be there. I have met people in person and on-line who have gone to Capernwray and continued onto spring school at Hosby, and I have never heard one negative thing. I would say stick it out. The best is yet to come. She might not know why she is there now, but in the years to come it will become clear.
Posted by: gid at February 14, 2006 02:46 PMhey! i am an alum of Tauernhof, the capernwray in Austria. I am happy to see a blog site for capernwray fans! for me, the capernwray experience was definitely one of the better life choices i made. clearly the schooling is not rigorous as in a university or college, but i think it is intentionally set up that way. While i was there, i definately received alot of bible instruction which gave me plenty of food for thought. and the fact that the school was situated in a beautiful natural setting, combined with the amount of free time we had to let the teaching sink in, gave to a great time of growing in my personal relationship with our creator. I have not kept up to date with the speaker list from today, but i would encourage you and your daughter to persevere, like gid said, God has reasons for what he allows, sometimes we need to be quiet to hear and patient to grow. We hope to go to Holsby this fall to help on staff, and are looking forward to what that holds for us!

Posted by: paul at March 3, 2006 01:24 PMHey JD....i remember you well!!! You came to Ravencrest Jan '04 and you roomed with Nathan, Daniel and John. Good to see you are doing well. I have since volunteered at Holsbybrunn the summer of 1997(and hung out with Fred a lot!), Ravencrest during summer and fall 1998, and Greece(Kingfisher) summer/fall/spring 2004/05. Yeah, so Capernwray has been a big part of my life and I love it. I am hoping to get back there this summer if everything goes well. I still see Jeremy Wiebe, Nathan Bartel, Broni Wiebe(Scattum) and Mel Ratzlaff around Chilliwack and Fred in Sweden when i go over there! Take Care bro

Hey, an old timer here. I was at Ravencrest in 1980-81 and again in 1986-87. I was from georgia and about the only southerner not from texas. any of my old classmates out there?? How about you, Jim Kilgore?? Any Canadian takers??
email at pkjkanderson@yahoo.com
Hey Joel! Glad to hear everything is going well. Sound like fun hanging out with Fred. The last I had heard of him he was moving to Africa?at least I think he was. I wish could have been more involved with torchbears over the years. Jeremy, Nathan, Broni, Mel, all those names bring a real flash from the past. I hope they are all doing well.
God Bless, and thanks for leaving a comment. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond.
I was a student at Holsby for Winter School in 88-89, then Capernwray for Spring School. In 91-92, I returned to Holsby to work on staff. I live in Blaine, WA, but for the past year, I have been touring the USA by car and trailer with my spouse, Dotti, and our Standard Poodle, Rylee Joy. We're on a mission to engage hearts & minds, create authentic connections and dissolve differences that separate us... especially when those differences deny equality and justice to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. Check out our adventures at http://www.gayintostraightamerica.com. I know I'm not the only lesbian/gay alumni from Torchbearers. I'd like to hear from others. Check out recent news update from our journey, where I write about visiting Ravencrest http://www.gayintostraightamerica.com/index.php?page_id=12&newsletter_id=79

Posted by: Robynne Sapp at September 4, 2006 01:06 PMHey JD...stumbled on this site and thought i would leave you a note.94' seems like a long time ago. I married Broni and we now have three kids(twin girls and a boy). The thing that we both rememberd about you was that you looked at Broni one evening and said"you are going to eat your kids". Well she hasn't. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a website where everyone from Ravencrest could share what has happened to them? Anyways.....take care....Broni says hi
Posted by: Jeremy Wiebe at September 11, 2006 12:54 AMHey Jeremy and Broni! I'm glad to hear you guys are married. I vaguely remember telling Broni that she would eat her kids. I?m not sure what was going through my mind at the time, but I have pretty good instincts about such things :-) lol
No really, I know it gets cold up there in the winter and food gets short, so make sure you do some extra canning this year, just in case...
Leslie and I are due with our 3rd little one in January. I might need to get some tips on how to handle three. I am already telling myself that we will have to move from man on man to zone defense. Though kids are a wonderful blessing and I would not trade them for anything.
I agree about having a site about sharing what has happened to us. I would love to catch up on what everybody has been up to. Thanks for stopping by. Feel free to lurk around if you get board.
God Bless
Hej san, gid!
I don't see much from my era :), but I attended Holsby winter '77-78, and Capernwray for Spring School in '78 as well. LOVED IT- Holsby especially.
We're seeking out current info on Torchbearers as our eldest is now a senior and plans to be "the next generation!" in the fall of '07. Kelsi leans towards Holsby, too, at this point...Has anyone been recently that could tell us some about what it's like there currently? The best way to let us know would be email: norske.poole@juno.com (No blog site- don't even know how you start one!- sorry! :)
We live on the eastern border of Iowa right on the Mississippi. We have four kids, who love Jesus and are growing- very blest, very grateful!!! My Torchbearer experience was one of God's best gifts in my life to date- made me a grounded christian, and a better wife, citizen and mom. We're praying it will be the same for our kids, Lord willing...
We wish you His wisdom and much joy, love and laughter as you raise your children in His ways.
Blessings to you- Susan (Eitreim) Poole
PS: My sister, Kari, attended the one in Switzerland in '80-81(now defunct), and brother, Derek, attended Bodenseehof in '82-83-Also loved it! Hoping most of our 10 kid total will also go.
PPS: Have to comment: Dearest Robynne- You've been deceived. While no worse than any other sin, homosexuality is one just the same. And, like all sin, we aren't to embrace it and encourage others to as well. Also, like all sin, Jesus can set you free and heal you of the things that led you there. Exodus Ministries or Focus on the Family can help be Jesus-with-skin-on in the process of getting free. Don't harden your heart. He loves you and has a better way.

Posted by: Aaron at January 7, 2007 02:55 AMHello,
I am planning on attending Portantorchas in Costa Rica. I was wondering if any of you have any information or know of someone who attended there. Thanks
Hey, JD! I went to Ravencrest in the Fall of 1994 - tall, blonde hair, southern accent. Unfortunately, I only spent 3 months at good ole' Craven'rest but it was some of my fondest memories. I remember you well. I lived in the Berg with Amber, who turned out to be my long-lost best friend. We still stay in touch and she was my maid of honor when I got married this past March. Anywho, it was fun to run across this site and see a few old names and relive a few memories. I sent the link to Amber so she could share the laugh with me. It is great to see your adorable family -- your boys are so cute. I have three nephews who are the light of my life, and Brian and I cannot wait to start a family of our own. Talk soon. All the best, Kristie
Posted by: Kristie at October 28, 2007 07:25 PMHey Kristie! I most certainly do remember you and Amber. I'm glad you left a comment. Congratulations on getting married. So what do you do now? I am a programmer in Chattanooga. Where are you living?
Posted by: gid at October 29, 2007 02:47 PMI am living in South Carolina and am an Internet Marketing Manager. I graduated with degrees in English and German but ended up mangaging content for a website, which then turned into Online Marketing. Go figure. But I really love what I do. I am by no means technical - I just get to have all the fun with the strategy and creative. Amber is in Oregon and teachs elementary school. She is great at what she does and her students love her to pieces. All the best. Stay in touch.

Remember how you felt when your dream girl shot you down? Well now you never have to feel that way again! Pheromones have been proven to work, and are guaranted to increase your attractiveness to women of all ages. Just look at some of the testimonials we have received back from 100% satisfied repeat customers! :
"I've always had a problem approaching girls. They would just walk past me like I didn't exist. I sometimes felt like they purposely would not give me any attention just because they were snobby and stuck up. Now, when I use Ultra Allure Pheromones, it's alot easier to approach girls because THEY are usually the ones that will smile at me first or make eye contact."
Robert K, Boise Idaho
"I saw you guys offered a moneyback guarantee, so I though I would give it a go(I had nothing to lose). Well how glad am I that I did! My first night out with a little Ultra Allure on me I had 4 different girls ask me what I was wearing and what I was doing later(I met up with the hottest of the 4 ;) ) Now I don't even leave the house without throwing on a few dabs of Ultra Allure- its my (not so) secret weapon! I can honestly say this product truly works, women are really drawn to you once they catch a little bit of the scent."
Brad M. Kentucky
